Stumbling Confidence
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Phillip Zimmerman

Hebrews 11:1 (NASB)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Indiana was asked to do the impossible. He has read the instructions. In fact, he is clutching the directions in his hand. He knows what he must do. But his eyes see something contrary to what he’s been told to do. And now he must decide. Will he yield to the evidence witnessed by his eyes, or will he execute the steps laid out before him in his father’s book?

Indiana steps shakily forward, hoping that something will keep him from the certain and terrible demise he foresees if his eyes are correct. He stumbles as his feet find firm footing in what appears to be thin air.

Isn’t this a beautiful example of faith? But wait a minute…Indiana’s step forward meant abandoning all reason, clinging desperately to a wild strand of hope that something he did not know would save him.

But our faith in God should look rather different. Faith does not demand that we blindly ignore the evidence before us. Instead, faith is placing our full confidence, having “full assurance,” in who God is and the evidence of His character. Faith is supreme confidence in the character of God – that what He has said is true. In other words, faith is acting as though God’s Word, the Bible, is true. If God is calling you to something that appears impossible, don’t stumble forward. Walk confidently in the promise that “faithful is He who called you, and He also will bring it to pass” (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

This is that powerful scene (who can forget this?)
